January 1st:
The story of Dark Fibre follows a simple cable wallah from Bangalore as he wolks his way through very typical poor and rich areas in the city in his
day to day work.
As a sideline he helps young wealthy students with their university projects which entail online research.
Though his life may seem simple
enough, he stumbles upon some very sensitive data which throws him political groups he struggles to find out himself what he actually has and once he does discover the power
of his knowledge, he needs to decide what he will do with it.
During the making of Dark Fibre in Bangalore the directors witnessed first hand the beating of women in piblic who wore "mordern dress" which sparked in them the idea to include this theme through out the movie and indeed become central as the story unfolds.
No doubt this film has remain remained in the hearts and minds of those who have seen it, a story so powerful, heart felt and full of the human experience at the hands of the controling class will hit a hard message to the viewers.
Noam Chomsky gives voice over to Dark Fibre which at times give it a documentary feel, his views on modern India can teach any society at any time some very valuable lessons.
The Film also features Peter Wintonick who is well know film documentary director, Peter plays a role which lends most of the political opinions which from the basis of the story. He also often highlights the plight of women in India.
October 15th:
THE LOCAL CABEWALLAH
Your local cablewallah is a Private Cable Operator, a private small cable company dealing providing anywhere from twenty to a hundred channels to their local neighborhoods.
They put up their own cable dish to down-link the broadcast signals from the satellite and also add their own channels by buying up pirate DVDs and playing them on home equipment.
The cable wallahs take care of their own infrastructure, laying cables across roofs, through trees and snaking around buildings. Each operates in their own area of town: the cable wallahs in Dark Fibre operate in the area of Shivajinagar,
a dense, predominantly Muslim area of Bangalore and one of the oldest parts of the city.
